In service to its mission of celebrating Hudson Valley history and culture, Historic Hudson Valley runs programs designed to educate schoolchildren. The programs, which involve hands-on activities and tours led by trained guides dressed in period clothing, have been updated to align with Common Core educational standards and cater to a wide range of grade levels.
The programs take place at three different locations. Washington Irving’s Sunnyside hosts programs for children in kindergarten through 11th grade, including “A Cottage on the Hudson” and a seasonal program called “Legend Days.” Programming at Philipsburg Manor begins at the first-grade level, and the short-term “Discover Pinkster” special event planned for May 2015 will accommodate students through 12th grade. At Van Cortlandt Manor, programs include “Through Young Eyes: 18th-Century Community,” serving students in kindergarten through second grade, and “Reflections of Everyday Life” and “Crafts and Tasks,” for students in grades three through seven. A prominent national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving reading comprehension in the United States, ReadWorks delivers valuable resources and support to teachers and helps to maximize academic achievement among their students. The organization offers a broad array of educational tools, ranging from research-based lessons and units to nonfiction and literary passages. ReadWorks also formulates in-depth question sets designed to evaluate students’ understanding of complex texts.
Question sets encourage students to ask and answer questions about the texts they read, all while singling out the pertinent details and deemphasizing the less important ones. Question sets also support students’ understanding of text structures and help students make high-level inferences about the evidence presented in the text. In addition to demonstrating how contextual clues can be used to deduce the meaning of vocabulary words, question sets allow students to complete open-response answers based on a thoughtful evaluation of the text.
